Between its rare feature of a Taylor Swift song, comparisons to sentient dolls past, and bizarre, TikTok-style dance breaks, the memes really make themselves. The film finds a young, recently orphaned girl taken in by her aunt, who works in robotics. She introduces her niece to a lifelike android, soundtracked by Swift’s “It’s Nice to Have a Friend,” but the joy of her new companion soon turns to fear as it becomes overly protective of the girl—seemingly murderously so. Megan Thee Stallion quickly kickstarted some of the fun, sharing her excitement over the trailer on Twitter. Shortly after, the “Sweetest Pie” singer wrote, “Annabelle bitch your [sic] OVER,” referencing the haunted doll from The Conjuring franchise. Other Twitter users enjoyed the idea that these famous, come-to-life dolls were at war with one another. “Annabelle has 24 hours to respond to #M3GAN,” another wrote. “Chucky could be quaking,” agreed another. That’s not necessarily a reference to each doll’s ability to frighten or kill, though, as it features a clip from the trailer in which M3gan is inexplicably dancing in a hallway that has been edited to feature Beyoncé’s ‘Alien Superstar’ in the background. It seems, instead, to be suggestive of a dance battle. M3gan’s dance moves are questionable at best, though, looking more like a TikTok trend to jump on than an impassioned performance. The Swifties had to get in on the fun, too, as it’s a rarity to hear Swift’s songs in a trailer or film these days. And of course, we couldn’t let this all go by without a Twilight joke, too.
