The actor, who won a Golden Globe for his role of Oh Il-nam, the survival competition’s oldest contestant, was originally accused of inappropriately touching a woman in December of 2021, though the misconduct allegedly occurred in 2017. As reported by Variety, the case was closed in April of 2022 before the unnamed victim requested it be reopened. Prosecutors in Suwon, South Korea, filed charges against Yeong-su on Thursday, Nov. 24. According to the publication, the 78-year-old denied the allegation when questioned by prosecutors, later sharing a statement with Korean broadcaster JTBC that said, “I just held her hand to guide the way around the lake. I apologized because [she] said she wouldn’t make a fuss about it but it doesn’t mean that I admit the charges.” He was released without detention following the indictment, and a trial date has yet to be announced. Yeong-su was recently featured in a government commercial about regulatory innovation, which the Korean ministry of culture pulled from the air following the indictment, per Variety. Born in 1944 in what is now part of North Korea, he’s spent most of his career on stage versus camera; he has only five acting credits on IMDB. According to Variety, back in 2013, he said he’d acted in over 200 stage productions. Yeong-su isn’t the first actor from the hit series to face serious charges. Lee Jung-jae, who became the first Asian man to win an Emmy for lead actor for his role as Seong Gi-hun, racked up several charges in the ’90s, including multiple assaults and DUIs, according to The Daily Beast.
